The layout of the traditionally constructed building provided nursery facilities on the ground floor whilst administration activities were due to be carried out in a first-floor office area.
The bespoke design was centred around the nursery’s operational requirements. Sizes of rooms and their proximity to specific facilities were tailored around the age of the expected occupants. Changing facilities were provided for early years whilst older children located near to the specially designed toilet facilities.
Safety was at the forefront of all considerations, with underfloor heating utilised to both remove the potential for hot surfaces, which could cause injury, and also provide comfort for building users who by their nature spend a greater majority of their time in close contact with the floor.
The setting out of the building footprint was designed to maximise usable external space by reducing the distance to boundary. Whilst this presented some challenges with regards to construction the end result is ideal for the operation of the nursery.
Externally a permeable tarmac carpark was constructed and the ground prepared in teaching areas to allow a specialist contractor to install educational and play equipment directly for the client during the latter stages of the contract whilst acting under our overall safety management.
The site was in a tight location with narrow access, surrounded by residential properties and adjacent to a busy doctor’s surgery. Works were carried out in a considered manner with regular liaison with neighbouring properties to ensure minimal impact was caused by the construction phase of the project.
The final product was a high quality facility which should hopefully be enjoyed by many children for years to come.
