The initial design intention was to retain the existing front façade whilst demolishing the balance of the building and using traditional a traditional construction to provide a revised footprint, better suited to the operations of the business whilst also retaining the original character of the property.
Following the propping and retention works for the façade, demolition of the existing elements and commencement of new construction, the client made the decision to replace the retained façade.
Design adaptions were made to make ensure that the new front elevation of the building maintained the aesthetic properties and charm of it’s predecessor whilst achieving the performance benefits of modern materials.
With the site located adjacent to a canal, a busy road and residential development to 3 sides, planning of construction activities was key to the success of the contract. With little external space around the building vehicle movements and material storage was constantly assessed to reduce the impact of the construction activities on the local community.
